Share Transfers

A share transfer moves shares from one account to another without a sale. It is added manually and creates no gain or loss.

What it is and when to use it

Use a share transfer when your shares change accounts but stay yours, for example when you move a portfolio from one broker to another. FundStat records the move without a sale, so the position keeps its purchase cost and your results are not affected.

Use a share transfer when
  • You move shares between two of your accounts in FundStat, for example from one broker to another.
  • Shares arrive from an account or broker you do not track in FundStat.
  • Shares leave for an account or broker you do not track in FundStat.
Use something else when
  • You sold the shares and received cash: add a SELL.
  • You bought shares on the market: add a BUY.
  • A company event changed your shares, such as a spin-off or merger: add a corporate action.
  • You move cash between accounts: add a withdrawal on one account and a deposit on the other.

How it affects your results

Transfer value

Number of shares × market price on the transfer date. FundStat fills in the closing price for you. Shares moved in add this value to the account’s net deposits, and shares moved out subtract it, so the move itself is neither a gain nor a loss and does not change your returns.

Purchase cost

Shares moved out leave at their FIFO purchase cost, with no sale and no tax event. Shares moved in keep the purchase cost you enter, which drives unrealized gain, the result of a later sale and PIT-38. If you leave it empty, FundStat uses the market price, so the gain made before the transfer is not counted.

How to move shares between two accounts

  1. 1On the source account, open Add transactions, choose Add manually and click Add share transfer. Select Shares moved out, then enter the date, the asset and the number of shares. Keep the closing price filled in as the market price.
  2. 2Click Add transfer, then Submit to save it. The transfer now appears in the source account’s Closed positions with its purchase cost.
  3. 3On the target account, add another share transfer and select Shares moved in. Use the same date, number of shares and market price as on the source account.
  4. 4In Purchase cost / share, enter the purchase cost shown for this transfer in the source account’s Closed positions. Then add and submit the transfer.

With the same date and market price on both sides, a wallet that includes both accounts sees the withdrawal and the deposit cancel out, so its net deposits stay the same.

Only one of the accounts is in FundStat? Add just that side. For shares moved in, take the purchase cost from your previous broker’s statement.
